NRR Interclub Durban NRR

23rd – 25th August 2024

The NRR (Natal Rod and Reel) Interclub in Durban is a prominent fishing competition organised by the Natal Deep Sea Rod and Reel Club and brings together multiple fishing clubs from around the region for a multi-day competition. 

This significant social and sporting event in the local angling community sees anglers compete in various categories, targeting different species in the warm Durban waters, and promotes camaraderie, skill development, and conservation efforts.

Queen of the Ocean Ladies Competition St Lucia SLSBC

30th – 31st August 2024

114 Lady anglers in 40 boats (including 15 first-time fishing Queens) hit the waters at the  Queen of the Ocean Ladies Competition hosted by the St Lucia Ski Boat Club to promote women’s angling.

The 4th year of this awesome comp includes big prizes, Friday’s mega-popular “Beach Party”, and of course some epic catches.

It’s time again for loads of yellowtail action in Yzerfontein before SA’s top anglers battle it out at the SADSAA Bottom Fish Nationals in Durban. And Team SA is battling it out with the best of the best at the Hawaiian Billfish International in Kona. These are all the big fishing tournaments this August.

60TH HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT

27 July–4 August 2019

A team of three of SA’s best game fish anglers represents SADSAA at the 60th annual Hawaiian Internationational Billfish Tournament. YZERFONTEIN YELLOWTAIL CHALLENGE

On the west coast, one tournament to definitely look forward to this August is the big yellowtail extravaganza in Yzerfontein. All species of marlin. Daily prizes. And the big overall prize for the best performance over the 4 days of awesome bill fishing. One of SA’s original conservation-minded comps, the Mapelane Billfish Invitational, takes place 13–16 March 2024 in St Lucia.

MAPELANE BILLFISH INVITATIONAL

With 2024 being its 24th year, the Mapelane Billfish Invitational was one of the first – if not SA’s first-ever – marlin comp that’s 100% tag and release from when it was started in 2000 to today. And it’s, of course, for club members and by special invitation only, for anglers who share the club’s conservation ideology – it’s inside parkland after all.

TOURNAMENT PROGRAMME

The 24th Mapelane Billfish Invitational is on 13–16 March 2024 at Mapelane Ski-Boat Club in the Mapelane reserve near St Lucia. Registration is on 13 March at the clubhouse, with 4 fishing days planned up until 16 March, weather permitting.

Teams launch at 6AM on fishing days, with lines up and weigh-in at 2pm every day. And the closing and awards ceremony will take place on 16 March at the clubhouse.

QUALIFYING SPECIES AND PRIZES

Black marlin, blue marlin and striped marlin were the only species that counted towards the daily prizes. And, again, it’s tag-and-release only (see the comp rules below). 

Note that sailfish didn’t count towards your daily score in this comp, but they counted towards your overall score for the big prize. So, club chairman Les Hartley says a successful release on a sailfish could help boost your chances for the overall prize.

SPECIFIC TAG-AND-RELEASE RULES

Being one of SA’s pioneering billfish release comps, the club and the Mapelane Billfish Invitational organisers have over 20 years of experience in ensuring billfish safety and conservation. How a successful catch here works is, as soon as you have a hook-up, you radio it into beach control.

Now, they will have supplied each angler with a colour band, and you snap a picture of the fish on the leader with the angler and the colour band around their arm, all visible in the picture. And then you release the fish.

After lines up, the organisers will just review the call-in time, your photo and your recorded time etc. And if everything’s in order, you got yourself a successful release.

The Border boys. The young bucks. And the ladies who took the cake. It was an awesome weekend in Gansbaai. And an even better weekend down at Overberg Boat Club where nine provincial teams competed in the 2022 Kleinbaai BottomFish Interprovincial.

Starting on Friday 30 September all the way through to Sunday 2 October, nine teams of three from Western Province, Eastern Province, Border and Southern Cape competed or the biggest Miss Lucy, Steebras, Carpenter, Yellowtail and more.

But it was a decidedly Border weekend, as the results show – Border took 2 out of the 3 top results. Here are all the final results, plus the top 3 teams at Kleinbaai 2022.

TOP 3 TEAMS AT KLEINBAAI BOTTOMFISH INTERPROVINCIAL 2022

NO 1 BORDER LADIES 

Taking first place was Border Ladies – yes! – led by captain Jacky Luef, with Belinda Fish and Jaime Lee Manthe.

NO 2 WP JUNIORS

In second place was the WP Juniors team: Luke Truter (cpt), Sean Cilliers and Hugo Bester.

NO 3 BORDER MEN

In third place, the veterans from Border: John Luef (cp), Everitt van Loggernberg and Fred Clarke.

KLEINBAAI BOTTOMFISH INTERPROVINCIAL

Originally planned for August, the comps team at Overberg opted to move the competition out to end-September, start October.

ALL QUALIFYING FISH SPECIES AND BAG LIMITS

Kleinbaai is traditionally one of the most beloved tournaments among provincial anglers, greatly because it’s a remarkable social and networking opportunity. But it’s also an excellent proving ground. Capped Protea angler Wayne Gerber from PEDSAC remarked that Kleinbaai is where he got his start on the road to his national colours.

And, of course, Kleinbaai traditionally produces some excellent bottom fishing. These are the qualifying species for this year’s bottom fish interprovincial:

Hottentot: min 25cm or 1kg, limit 5

KLEINBAAI 2018 RESULTS

The overall winners of the competition were Eastern Province who had a total of four teams representing in the competition. Here are the results:

1. GOLD: EP Black

With a total score of 554.41, a hearty congrats to the boys of EP Black: Ben de Bruyn, Ian Peinke and Brian Gerber.

2. SILVER: EP Ladies

What an incredible thing it was to see this all-ladies team take the silver. And a special mention to all three of you who contributed that final score of 495.74. That’s three years finishing in the top three for Sheena Rothner Gerber, who took gold in 2016, silver in 2017 and now silver again in 2018.

Also a stellar tournament by Jen Nelson who’s consistent performance was a pleasure to watch. And then, of course, a mention of Vanessa Gerber who also posted the highest total weight in catches overall in the tournament. You ladies rock!

SOUTHERN CAPE DEEP SEA ANGLING ASSOCIATION

Now, the Southern Cape is not a province of SA, but more a beautiful region that runs from Western Cape’s Agulhas and the Overberg region all along the southern coast to Knysna and Bitou, approaching the Eastern Province.

And it’s the Southern Cape Deep Sea Angling Association (SCDSAA), that organises and serves the launch sites and ski-boat clubs of the area. A region that still produces some of SA’s most competitive anglers, both in bottom and game fish. And you can follow them on their Facebook Page.

Plett Ski-Boat Club

Officially called the Plettenberg Bay Angling Association, Plett Ski-Boat Club and its amazing clubhouse is an iconic Plett landmark. With an awesome restaurant, and loads of fishing – rock & surf, deep sea, and freshwater. You can even get loads of advice on the best bait and fishing spots from the locals.

Southern Cape Yacht Clubs 

Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club

In a shocking move, the local authorities had recently evicted the club (one of the oldest in the world) from their clubhouse at the waterfront. However, the club now has a temporary residence at the nearby Blaize & Barrel restaurant at 12 Marsh Street in Mossel Bay. You even get a special discount at the bar when you’re a club member.

ABOUT THE NEW SUZUKI DF350AMD

5 Years after it first started production – launching as an award-winning outboard – Suzuki’s flagship DF350A outboard gets a brand-new range addition in the new Suzuki DF350AMD.

It features 3 key feature updates you’ll want to know about. And what’s pretty cool about it, is that Suzuki focused 100% on solving a few practical concerns with the new addition.

WHAT’S NEW ON THE SUZUKI DF350AMD

Suzuki put their engineering heads towards improving a key installation concern with the new DF350AMD. See, on some boat types, installing the DF350 requires you to use an external steering cylinder on the motor well to control the steering axis.

And, in many such cases, if you had any trouble, it’s usually this external sterling cylinder that caused it.

So Suzuki set out to provide an elegant new solution with an all-new Suzuki Integrated Steering System. Plus: Used the opportunity to update the gear case and eke some extra performance out of the engine – because, why not?

Here’s what’s new and improved on the Suzuki DF350AMD.

1 NEW INTEGRATED STEERING SYSTEM

With the conventional external steering cylinder setup (left), you have an additional (often third-party) hydraulic system impacting your steering. Which just leaves room for things to go wrong.

So, Suzuki introduces the all-new Integrated Steering System (right), which incorporates your steering axis and control internally in the new Suzuki DF350AMD. Giving you better, more reliable steering, control and operation.

2 ALL-NEW ADVANCED GEAR CASE

And what better time to update the gear case a bit? 

The DF350AMD features a new oil circulation mechanism that lowers the oil temperature and reduces the amount of oil needed to operate the engine.

Instead of using 3.2 Litres of oil, the DF350AMD uses only 2.8 Litres.

And internal tests show not only better durability and reliability, but also 2% better performance.

PLUS: The new gear case also makes maintenance easier, because you n longer need to lift the boat when changing oil – bonus!

3 SAME CRAFTSMANSHIP AND QUALITY

Not everything needs to be updated. The new Suzuki DF350AMD will feature the same craftsmanship you enjoy in the DF350A.

It still comes with a dual prop, louvers, injectors and water intakes.

In short: The same looks and quality, with a few smart updates and extra performance.

WHEN WILL THE DF350AMD BE AVAILABLE IN SOUTH AFRICA?

The new outboards will arrive in January 2023 and will be available in black and white, with 25” and 30” shaft options.

River mouths, big game fish and super-secret fishing spots. The Transkei is one of SA’s most rugged, outdoorsy, “wild” regions. With legends of monster crayfish and the likes of Oom Dan Bekker. So, you’re often hard-pressed to find any solid info about the local fishing scene….

This is why it’s always good to connect with the local ski-boat clubs of the Border region.

Border Deep Sea Angling Association

In SA, the Eastern Cape is divided (administratively) in the deep sea fishing world between Eastern Province and Border. With Border being the old Ciskei and Transkei areas, running from East London up along the rich stretch of coast up to the Wild Coast.

And it’s the Border Deep Sea Angling Association (BDSAA) that organises and serves the launch sites and ski-boat clubs of the Border area. A region that still produces some of SA’s most competitive anglers, both in bottom and game fish. And, if you ever want to get hold of the BDSAA, just give Mr. Tyrone Gower a ring at East London Ski-Boat Club.

Ski-Boat Clubs of the Border Region (Transkei, Eastern Cape)

East London Ski-Boat Club

Ideal for bottom species, especially big copper (red steenbras), except for this one time per year when the locals know you’ll get lekker game fish, too. Situated inside the port of East London on the east bank of Buffalo River, it boasts everything from boat sheds to an awesome slipway to give you access to the ocean and deep sea fishing in East London and Gonubie. In fact, there are even launch facilities for visiting boats – so look the club up when you’re in the area.

There are a lot of good times and good bottom and deep sea fishing to be had at East London Ski-Boat Club.

Gonubie Marine Club

In the idyllic Gonubie area, right on the Gqunube River, about 21km from East London. Gonubie Marine Club is famous for its awesome steak nights, annual potjie events, interclub comps, and the Gonubie SuperSpar fishing competition.

Kei Mouth Ski-Boat Club

Right on the Great Kei River, just north of Morgan’s Bay, Kei Mouth Ski-Boat Club is something of a little-known gem in another of SA’s most beautiful regions. There’s everything from awesome inshore to deep sea fishing – even game fish to be had here.

Cintsa Ski-Boat Club

Another hidden gem! About 38 km from East London, at the mouth of the Chintsa River, there’s awesome ocean fishing to be had. And, if you ask around at the Chintsa Village and Country Club, you can find directions to the local Cintsa Ski-Boat Club – known for awesome fishing and occasional fishing competitions (especially over Christmas time).

Kwelera Ski-Boat Club

Just a bit north of Gonubie and East London lies another hidden gem in Kwelera Ski-Boat Club. Famous for producing some of Border’s top bottom fish contenders and hosting the annual Peri Wild Coast Challenge.

Christmas Vale Ski-Boat Club

Traditionally a bottom-fishing club, but lately producing some awesome game anglers too, you’ll this little gem in Christmas Vale just north of Keyser’s Beach and the Chalumna River Mouth. With interclubs and partaking in loads of local comps, plus: It’s one of the launching sites of the Peri Wild Coat Challenge.

Our New Address in PE

As most people in PE and the industry will know, we suffered a tragic and catastrophic fire at our previous premises in Brickmakerskloof Road earlier this year. And we’ve been working from a small makeshift space for the past few months.

And, unfortunately, the fire had caused structural damage to the building we occupied, meaning repairs would take very long. So we sourced a brand-new space at a new address that’s quite close to the harbour entrance. And it’s a beauty, we’d love for you to come pop in and see…
