WHAT’S NEW ON THE SUZUKI DF350AMD

Suzuki put their engineering heads towards improving a key installation concern with the new DF350AMD. See, on some boat types, installing the DF350 requires you to use an external steering cylinder on the motor well to control the steering axis.

And, in many such cases, if you had any trouble, it’s usually this external sterling cylinder that caused it.

So Suzuki set out to provide an elegant new solution with an all-new Suzuki Integrated Steering System. Plus: Used the opportunity to update the gear case and eke some extra performance out of the engine – because, why not?

Here’s what’s new and improved on the Suzuki DF350AMD.

1 NEW INTEGRATED STEERING SYSTEM

With the conventional external steering cylinder setup (left), you have an additional (often third-party) hydraulic system impacting your steering. Which just leaves room for things to go wrong.

So, Suzuki introduces the all-new Integrated Steering System (right), which incorporates your steering axis and control internally in the new Suzuki DF350AMD. Giving you better, more reliable steering, control and operation.

2 ALL-NEW ADVANCED GEAR CASE

And what better time to update the gear case a bit? 

The DF350AMD features a new oil circulation mechanism that lowers the oil temperature and reduces the amount of oil needed to operate the engine.

Instead of using 3.2 Litres of oil, the DF350AMD uses only 2.8 Litres.

And internal tests show not only better durability and reliability, but also 2% better performance.

PLUS: The new gear case also makes maintenance easier, because you n longer need to lift the boat when changing oil – bonus!

3 SAME CRAFTSMANSHIP AND QUALITY

Not everything needs to be updated. The new Suzuki DF350AMD will feature the same craftsmanship you enjoy in the DF350A.

It still comes with a dual prop, louvers, injectors and water intakes.

ABOUT THE NEW SUZUKI DF140BG

It really is the first 140hp outboard to feature drive-by-wire technology – the current DF140A is mechanical. And that means the new BG version is more responsive when you throttle or shift gears, and it’s going to give you better fuel efficiency.

HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE CURRENT DF140A?

Slightly bigger and heavier than the DF140A, the new DF140BG features a higher compression ratio and torque output. So you’re also going to feel the difference in terms of speed and acceleration.

Let’s take a look at some of the main improvements in the new DF140BG:

6 MAIN FEATURES

1. HIGHER COMPRESSION RATIO

The Suzuki engineers have taken the tried and tested 2 045cm3 four-cylinder 4-stroke engine of DF140A series and boosted it’s 9.7 compression ratio to a remarkable 10.5 in the new DF140BG.

That means max torque is up to 163.7Nm and you’re going to see the fuel savings on your pocket.

2. BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY

We’ve tested the new 140BG, and you’re going to see 4% less fuel usage at lower speeds and up to 14% better fuel efficiency at top-end speeds.

3. MORE SPEED, FASTER ACCELERATION

We’ve put the Suzuki DF140BG through its paces, and it’s a speed monster! The more responsive drive-by-wire system meant it gave us about 1 second faster acceleration times than the existing mechanical 140A.

And we got an average of 3.6km/h faster top speed.

4. GREAT NEW DESIGN

When you compare the look of the BG to the A-series, you’ll see it features a smooth and sleek new finish. With new all-black decals. And it comes in Nebular Black and Super Cool White colour options.

But it’s not all good looks. The new cowling design is actually to house a new air-intake structure that enhances intake performance too.

5. QUIETER OPERATION

That means she’s also quieter! The new intake is specially designed with a new large-volume resonator that reduces high-pitched noises at the intakes. And we’ve also included an optimised silencer that reduces resonance.

Plus: We’ve soundproofed the engine! That’s right, Suzuki completely replaced the engine cover material with an all-new, all-quiet sound-absorbing compound.

6. EASIER TO MAINTAIN

We’ve also made it easier to reach the oil filter. All you have to do is lift the upper cover and you get instant access to the filter. And there’s also a handy new oil spray tray that catches excess liquid when out technicians replace the filter. So your new DF140BG stays beautifully clean.

WHEN CAN I BUY THE NEW SUZUKI DF140BG?

The new DF140BG is available in TL and TX/ZX versions, in white or black. And the first shipment arrives in South Africa in October 2020.

NEW SUZUKI OUTBOARDS: DF200 ASTL (SS)

On 7 November 2019, Suzuki Marine South Africa announced the arrival of an all-new member of Suzuki’s premium sport outboard range, the SS Series – known by their telltale red graphics on the usual black and motors that are souped-up for increased performance.

New to the SS Series in South Africa is the new Suzuki DF200ASTL – or, as some people are already calling it, the 200 SS. And, we couldn’t find a local SA video, but here’s an international one showing off the awesome sporty mate black and cowling graphics design of this new outboard series:

HIGH-PERFORMANCE NEW 200 SS

The main difference between the standard DF200 and the 200 SS is the hydrodynamic design of the gear case on the DF200 ASTL. It’s similar to what Suzuki did with the new DF300, where the gear case on the 200 SS itself now reduces drag as the lower unit moves through the water – which is what enables the new prop and souped-up engine to really boost acceleration and top speed to new levels.

It also features the all-new Water Grip Sport propeller, a high-rake-blade prop that gives you more thrust power in the water, especially while turning, giving you faster acceleration, more manoeuvrability and a top-speed you’re going to want to test for yourself.

But, of course, those are just the fancy new toys on the outboard. The real magic is all the SS Series performance features you’ll find deep inside the motor.

Like all outboards in the SS Series, the new Suzuki DF200ASTL uses Suzuki’s high-performance “Big Block” displacement with an offset driveshaft layout, 2-stage gear reduction and multipoint sequential electronic fuel injection for powerful and exhilarating mid-range performance – while still being quite fuel-efficient.

The engine is redesigned: It’s still an inline 4-cylinder motor, but with dual overhead cams and powerful 10.2-to-1 compression ratio for superior throttle response. And that multi-stage sequential fuel injection combines nicely with its variable valve timing to give you power, torque and top-end speed you need to experience for yourself.

Beautiful sound. Sleek new looks. And the performance to match. Port Elizabeth local and something of a legend in SA light-tackle fishing circles Charles Wright took his newly repowered 5.5-metre cat out for the first time recently. And here’s what he had to say about the new Suzuki DF100s we fitted along with brand-new hydraulic steering.

“You have to love the performance on these Suzuki four strokes,” Charles beams, “they’ve just got a bit more grunt in them. We took Jubal with the new motors out for the first time last Saturday and, boy, do they run well. I had to keep playing on that edge between too much and just having fun out on the water.”

MORE POWER WITH NEW SUZUKI DF100s

“I had two 90hp two strokes on before, and you know I’ve never been tempted by the big Suzukis because I’m a light-tackle angler, so I go after skates and sharks around the harbour, a river mouth, Swartkops and such. You know, easy-going, maybe up to Richards Bay or Velddrif.

“But my sons wanted to be able to go out fishing at Rye Banks in PE. And even deeper. So, for that, you’re going to need something with a bit more oomph. So it was they who pushed for me to get the new Suzukis. 

“They said you could probably get the same kind of fuel consumption with a lot more power from the Suzuki 100s. And I wasn’t too sure at first. But after the test the other, I think they’re right, the Suzukis are really light on fuel.”

You’ve heard about Suzuki Lean Burn Control System since around 2011, when we first introduced it, won awards for it and systematically introduced it to all new four-stroke Suzuki outboards, from the DF15 up to the DF350. (Plus: Check out the all-new Suzuki DF350AMD.) But what exactly is Suzuki Lean Burn? How does it affect your outboard’s fuel economy? How does that reduced fuel consumption really compare?

We spoke to the original designers behind Suzuki’s Lean Burn technology in Japan and the US, compiled all the comparisons and bring you a few reviews. To give you a good overall look at the Lean Burn Control System.

WHAT EXACTLY IS SUZUKI LEAN BURN?

Simply put, it’s a series of sensors in the fuel-intake system that are controlled by computer programmes in the central control unit of your Suzuki outboard motor. They constantly measure your speed, acceleration and the conditions in and around the motor. And then they automatically adjust the ratio of fuel and air that they feed to the engine.

“We created an intelligent fuel management system to allow Suzuki owners to spend more time out on the water and less time at the fuel dock,” says Suzuki Chief R&D Engineer Hitoshi Matsumura, the leader of the Lean Burn project team at Suzuki’s Research and Development Centre in Hamamatsu.

When it was first launched circa 2010, Matsumura says they had to design the new system to be compatible with existing Suzuki outboards. “After that, we redesigned each and every component part for our new generation models, to make them as efficient as possible.”

HOW DOES SUZUKI LEAN BURN WORK?

Suzuki Lean Burn predicts, controls and optimises how much fuel is mixed with how much air to keep you moving at your current speed in the most fuel efficient way.

Normally, petrol engines use an air-fuel mix of around 14:1 (14 parts air for every 1 part of fuel). Suzuki Lean Burn can adjust this ratio automatically up to a lean 19:1, which is 19 parts air to every 1 part fuel – that’s 35% less fuel consumption.

What’s more, Suzuki Lean Burn is only active at low speeds and intermediate cruising speeds. Because when you open the throttle completely, you obviously want max power. Your Suzuki outboard won’t interfere with that. It’s only active while you’re cruising or when using your Suzuki as a trolling motor.

WHAT’S THE EFFECT: HOW MUCH FUEL DO YOU REALLY SAVE?

In April 2017, Boat and Boats Magazine tested the Lean Burn fuel economy on Suzukis from the DF200 and DF250 to the DF300. And they found that Lean Burn across these motors saves you on average 14% at cruising speeds. Then a range of commercial Suzuki customers from Germany, France, Italy and the UK gave testimonials about how their new outboards gave the same performance but with fuel savings around the 20% range.

But the best possible Suzuki outboard fuel consumption comparison comes when you measure the old-generation (pre-2011) Suzuki outboard motors with today’s updated models. Here’s how much fuel Suzuki Lean Burns saves you on average:

SUZUKI DF140 LEAN BURN

Average 16.4 Litres per hour at 21 knots in choppy conditions. And 19.6 Litres per hour at 26 knots.

SUZUKI DF20 LEAN BURN

Hooked up a separate tank with only 1 litre of fuel in it and drove the DF20 on a Suzuki inflatable in harsh and windy conditions for 27 minutes before fuel ran out. Going 15 knots, using only 2 Litres per hour.

SUZUKI DF90 LEAN BURN

Notably less fuel consumption on a four-stroke DF90 than a two-stroke 70ps engine.

Suzuki Marine is the most awarded outboards manufacturer in the world. No one has won more NMMA Innovation Awards than Suzuki for its outboard motors. And, if you’re asking yourself what the best boat engines are in the world, the official list of Suzuki’s NMMA Awards winners is probably the best place to start.

A HISTORY OF SUZUKI AWARDS

The first-ever Suzuki Marine outboard engine was launched in 1965. And in the last 53 years (that’ll be 55 in 2020 when Suzuki itself also celebrates 100 years) Suzuki Marine outboards have won countless awards. From commendations by US Boating Industry magazine to awards at boating shows from Miami to Europe and Asia. Too many to mention here.

But perhaps the most prestigious awards are Suzuki’s eight NMMA Innovations Awards over the last two decades.

ABOUT THE NMMA INNOVATION AWARDS

The US’s National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is one of the most recognised boating industry bodies in the world. And, every year, they announce the NMMA Innovation Award winners at the International Boat Builders’ Exposition & Conference (IBEX) expo, usually around September.

The awards celebrate superior innovation, products that really stand out from the rest, benefit the boating industry and drives down the costs for boat owners. And Suzuki has won the coveted award no less than eight times in the last 15 years.

ALL SUZUKI’S NMMA INNOVATION AWARD WINNERS

1. 2017 WINNER: SUZUKI DF350 A

Suzuki Marine’s most recent and flagship outboard motor was crowned the most innovative and one of the best in the world in 2017. Judges were impressed with the 4.4-litre V6 engine displacement, the largest in the industry. And that the DF350 had incredibly low fuel consumption at the same time.

The new dual louvre system means this award-winning boat engine effectively separates water and air on the fly. And the direct air intake gives it more efficient combustion and higher performance.

2. 2014 WINNER: SUZUKI DF30 A

One of the first things the NMMA noted in its Innovation Awards ceremony in 2014 is that the Suzuki DF30A and DF25A are both the lightest engines in their class. The DF30 was praised for specialised bearings that reduced mechanical friction in the engine and Suzuki’s new battery-less starting technology.

This means that you can work and pump fuel without needing to draw power from the battery. Very handy for easy starting in almost any conditions. Plus: It’s just so much fun for a small outboard.

3. 2014 WINNER: SUZUKI DF25 A

Although it’s not common in South Africa anymore – mainly because boat owners prefer the DF30 above – the Suzuki DF25 A shared the 2014 NMMA Innovation Award with it’s bigger 30ps brother because it featured all the same technology.

4. 2012 WINNER: SUZUKI DF300 AP

A two-time world champion boat engine, the Suzuki DF300 proved itself one of the best boat engines in the world when it won the NMMA Innovation Award for the second time in 2012. (The original DF300A was the 2006 winner – see below.)

Launched as the V6 alternative o the awarded DF300 A, the new Suzuki DF300 AP was the first outboard in the world to introduce selective rotation. Stronger forward and reverse gearing means the DF300 AP will run in either left or right rotation, which is a huge money-saver for boaters because you can just buy two engines for larger and know they can be fitted either on the left or right, easy.

Also notable is the Suzuki Lean Burn in the DF300 AP, because it managed to make the V6 version up to 7% more fuel efficient than it’s inline four-stroke brother (DF300 A). Who knew a V6 could use less fuel than a straight engine?

5. 2011 WINNER: SUZUKI DF50 A

Another two-time award winner, the Suzuki DF50 A won its first award in 1998 (then known as the IMTEC awards). But it was updated with some advanced new features recently and went on to win the 2011 NMMA Innovation Award for being 5% lighter than the original Suzuki DF50, using 23% less fuel, achieving a 6% faster top speed and 25% better acceleration.

The Suzuki DF50 A and its smaller sibling DF40 (below) are the only outboards in their class that have double overhead cams (DOHCs) and a maintenance-free timing chain. But the best part is the performance: See this motor accelerate like a monster in the video:

6. 2011 WINNER: SUZUKI DF40 A

The third two-time award winner on our list. The Suzuki DF40 A was awarded along with big brother DF50 A in 1998 and again in 2011. This was when Suzuki introduced its legendary Lean Burn Control system, meaning the DF40 uses 23% less fuel but accelerates 25% faster. It’s also easier and cheaper to maintain, easy to start and electronic fuel injection means it’s fast, very fast.

7. 2006 WINNER: SUZUKI DF300 A

Suzuki’s original 300ps award winner. The Suzuki DF300 A was the first Suzuki 300ps engine to win the NMMA Innovation Awards in 2006. (The follow-up DF300 AP won again in 2012 – see above).

It won because it was the world’s first four-stroke 300ps outboard boat engine, and it achieves a phenomenal 220.7kW of power – comparable to a V6. The Suzuki DF300 A introduced groundbreaking new technology like variable blade rotation to the industry.

8. 2003 WINNER: SUZUKI DF250 A

The world’s first production 250ps V6. The Suzuki DF250 won the NMMA Innovation Award in 2003 for its impressive acceleration, remarkable top speed and having the largest gear reduction ratio in its class.

The world’s first 15hp engine made with Suzuki’s Lean Burn and battery-less fuel injection. And it comes in a remote-steering option. The Suzuki DF15ATL has all the same cool features as the Suzuki DF15A. It’s a longer-shaft version. But you don’t steer it with a tiller.

It’s not any bulkier than the normal DF15A. It comes with the same tech: Suzuki Lean Burn, which actively measures the fuel needed while you operate the motor and adjusts the air/fuel mixture for optimum fuel efficiency. Battery-less fuel injection also gives you smoother operation and easier starts.

But the big difference is that there’s no tiller, and you steer it by remote wheel control. Handy if you have a smaller boat but don’t want to have to steer manually.
