10 Fish species, a conservation-first release method and over R100k in prizes to be won! Here’s all the info about the new 2020 ECM Species Challenge in Port Elizabeth
Update: After careful consideration of the weather conditions, the 2020 (Eastern Cape Motors) ECM Species Challenge was moved from 14–15 March to a new date: 4–5 April 2020. Hosted by PE Deep Sea Angling Club (PEDSAC) in Port Elizabeth, the skippers briefing will be on 3 April 2020 instead.
ALL DEEP SEA ANGLERS WELCOME
As always, the competition is open to all PEDSAC members and non-members – anyone can enter their own team and boat. The early entry fee is R300 per angler.
10 SPECIES NOMINATED
There’s a minimum size for all species. And also keep in mind that PEDSAC is driving a massive effort to change competitive fishing in SA. So this year, more than half the species are mandatory catch, measure and release – see more on PEDSAC’s groundbreaking techniques for bottom fish conservation.

GRAND PRIZE WINNER: BEN DE BRUYN
At this point, you might have been forgiven for thinking that one of the bigger fish catches would take the grand prize of a new boat. Or perhaps Michel Zoonekynd, who had a remarkable two species-winning catches.
But all the names were put into a hat. And, in front of everyone there, the lucky winner was drawn. It was Ben de Bruyn – obviously a very familiar face at PEDSAC.
Congratulations to all the winners. There were plenty more Calcutta and prize-draw winners, and remember that this competition is in support of the Aurora Children’s Home in PE.
