All the winners, plus: WATCH a monster kob catch and see who drove away with the new Suzuki-powered boat grand prize at the ECM Ford Bottom Species Challenge 2018 fishing competition in Port Elizabeth
Update: 21 November 2018
And we have a winner. None other than PEDSAC’s own Ben de Bruyn won the ECM Ford Species Challenge 2018 grand prize of a new boat powered by a Suzuki DF60. Out of a total of 9 species winners, Ben won the final draw. Here’s what happened during the 2018 Eastern Cape Motors (ECM) Ford Bottom Species Challenge 16–19 November in at PEDSAC in Port Elizabeth:
ECM FORD SPECIES A HUGE SUCCESS
Despite one blowout day on Saturday 17 November, Friday the 16th and Sunday 18 November made for good fishing days in Port Elizabeth during this annual bottom fishing competition. Anglers caught and released loads of fish – a reminder that this competition uses a unique release mechanism to promote bottom fish conservation.
WATCH: MONSTER KOB CATCH AND RELEASE
Beautiful fish caught by Deon Van Vuuren on the Ford challenge, safely released to live another day!
Posted by Kelly Evans on Sunday, 18 November 2018
By Sunday, anglers had caught and released 9 out of the 10 nominated fish species. And, out of all the catches of every species, the angler that caught largest (in measured size) fish was the winner for that species.
ALL THE ECM FORD SPECIES WINNERS
Each Species winning angler received a prize. After which all of their names went into a lucky draw for the grand prize. Here are the species winners:

At this point, you might have been forgiven for thinking that one of the bigger fish catches would take the grand prize of a new boat. Or perhaps Michel Zoonekynd, who had a remarkable two species-winning catches.
But all the names were put into a hat. And, in front of everyone there, the lucky winner was drawn. It was Ben de Bruyn – obviously a very familiar face at PEDSAC.
Congratulations to all the winners. There were plenty more Calcutta and prize-draw winners, and remember that this competition is in support of the Aurora Children’s Home in PE.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION: 10 SPECIES NOMINATED
The ECM Ford Species Challenge took place at Port Elizabeth club PEDSAC on 16–18 November 2018.
There are minimum weights allocated to each species. And also keep in mind that PEDSAC is driving a massive conservation effort to change competitive fishing in SA. PEDSAC is working with marine bodies to turn the ECM Ford Bottom Species into SA’s first 100% catch-and-release-only competition by 2019. So this year, more than half the species are already mandatory catch, weigh and release. Read about how the comp works and the bottom fish conservation efforts here.
