Fishing tournaments: October 2019

21–26 OCTOBER 2019

One of SA’s oldest and best-known competitions celebrates its 51st year in 2019. This is the open competitive side to this event (there’s an official SASAA side to it below), and there are loads of awesome cash prizes and goodies to be won as the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association (WPDSAA) and Cape Boat and Ski-Boat Club in Simon’s Town welcome all national, provincial and novice teams to the Rumbly Bay Tuna Invitational.

21–26 OCTOBER 2019

Happening at the same time and place (Cape Boat and Ski-Boat) as the Rumbly Bay tuna comp, the Own Choice Interprovincial is the official SADSAA tuna fishing side, meaning it’s for the amateur anglers who have (or are gunning for) provincial and national colours. It’s much more stringent rules and precise fishing – usually pulling out massive tuna with nothing but a 10kg line, so it’s naturally spectacular to see these guys in action.

25–27 OCTOBER 2019

One of SA’s most conservation-minded game fish competitions: 12 species are nominated and each team is only allowed to catch and weigh-in five specimens of each species. The idea is that limiting the number of catches minimises the competition’s impact on fish populations, good for conservation. Check out the 12 x 12 Species at St Lucia Ski-Boat Club.

South Africa plays host to international fishing body Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive–Mer (FIPS-M)’s 2019 World Angling Games Big Game Fishing tournament in Sodwana Bay. It’s a special one: National teams from all around the world will assemble in Sandton, JHB, on 9 February 2019 for the flag and march opening ceremony, and then fly to King Shaka airport in Durban on 10 February. They’ll be shuttled to Sodwana – just imagine, all the world’s top fisherman “roughing it” with no hotel – for four days of top-flight international fishing. Species are marlin, sailfish and game fish, especially tuna. Check out the 2019 FIPS-M World Angling Games.

1–2 March 2019

There’s big prize money and only marlin over 500 pounds (that about 230kg and up) make the cut for this international competition. What’s really cool is that, although it’s hosted in Seychelles, you don’t have to physically go there to compete. As long as you fish in demarcated zones inside the Indian Ocean (Including South Africa, North and South Australia and the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea), you can fish using local time and just call in your catches. It’s a super exciting way to run an international comp. Discover the first-ever Indian Ocean Marlin Cup.

All the Southern Gauteng Deep Sea Angling Association clubs head to Shelly Beach (KZN) for the annual interclub competition, known as the Rosebowl. It’s a game- and billfish tournament, with most guys going after marlin and sailfish. But a good catch of tuna has been known to tip the favour of a club very quickly, so be on your toes. Often called the “richest fishing competition in Southern Africa”, the Durban  Ski-Boat festival is a multi-day, multi-discipline fishing tournament with around R1.5-million in prizes up for grabs. It’s quite a spectacle: Videos and images of the hundreds of boats that attend every year are quite amazing. What’s really cool is the club takes care of all boat security, launches and towing free of charge, and they go all out to accommodate everyone – there’s loads of entertainment for family and the kids.
