UPDATE: All The Big Fishing Competitions in September
New in deep angling competitions: Proteas off to FIPS-M World Champs in France, plus: coming up at Warnadoone and Knysna fishing competitions in September 2018
Update: 5 September 2018
The All Coastals Bottomfish Interprovincial in Knysna, Natal’s Bottomfish Interzonals in Warnadoone and SA’s Proteas head to Frontignan, France for the 27th annual FIPS-M Big Game World Championships 2018 (updates below). Here’s what’s happening in SA and international deep-sea angling competitions and fishing competitions in September 2018.
KwaZulu-Natal Bottomfish Interzonals
Central, Lower South Coast, USC, North Coast and all of KwaZulu-Natal’s top zonal fishing teams are meeting once again at Warner Beach for the 2018 Bottomfish Interzonal competition.
The fishing was very good at last year’s (2017) tourney, where Central teams took both first and second place. We’re however excited to see what the juniors will do this year. Those who recall last year will remember that the Lower South Coast Juniors pulled off an amazing third place medal. After bringing in no fish whatsoever on day one and two, the LSC Juniors came back on day three with amazing catches and four species, taking them from the bottom all the way up to a bronze.

ALL COASTALS BOTTOMFISH INTERPROVINCIAL, KNYSNA
28 September–2 October
This year’s All Coastals Bottomfish Interprovincial is hosted by the Knysna Angling Association from 28 September to 2 October 2018. You’ll remember that this competition was hosted by Suidpunt Deep Sea Angling Club in Struisbaai in 2017, where the fishing was good and most teams benefited from bonus yellowtail catches.
You might remember that Eastern Province’s Sheena Gerber caught a record-contending yellowtail while Western Province’s Christof Dahl did the same in the junior class with a monster red stump. Western Province took the gold in 2017, with EP’s Gerber family taking silver and border taking bronze. Who will it be this year in Knysna?

FIPS-M WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
29 September–6 October 2018
The Proteas are off to the French south-coast town of Frontignan La Peyrade – where everyone is just obsessed with their fishing – for the 27th annual FIPS–M (international fishing body: Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive–Mer) Big Game Fishing World Championships. Our boys are hosted by La Pêche Sportive Frontignanaise, a local club that knows how to draw crowds to their fishing comps.
It’s a Big Game competition, so the main aim will be bringing extraordinary specimens of tuna and swordfish. But, note that this is a strictly no-kill competition, so it will push all the world-class competing sports fishermen to their limits in so many ways.
The Proteas, along with all the world athletes, will convene for a welcome dinner on 29 September – and this part of the world is famous for its good food and wine, especially Muscat. Before prepping for 5 days of 10-hour Big Game fishing sessions from 7:00 to 17:00 (French Time) and all catches must be documented on film.
It’s going to be extraordinary. Keep updated during the competition through Nauti-Tech Suzuki and the SADSAA Facebook page.
Note: These are all the September 2018 fishing competitions currently on our radar from the South African Deep Sea Angling Association (SADSAA). If you know of a competition or think your fishing competition should be on this list, we’ll gladly add it: Drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
