How to Flush an Outboard Motor The Right Way
WATCH: Africa specialist marine services #BoatPro shows you the fastest and most effective way to flush your outboard motor
What’s the right way to flush an outboard motor? Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury – yes, you do need to flush an outboard you use on salt water with fresh water from time to time. Although today’s technology is quite good, most manufacturers still recommend you flush your outboard after every trip on the ocean or estuary.
One of the top commercial marine and private boating experts in sub-Sharan Africa shows us the clever way to do it.

In this video, Gary Bluett of Odyssea Marine in Zimbabwe, a renowned #BoatPro in both the private and especially the commercial marine sector in the area, demonstrates why and how you need to flush an outboard – in just 6 minutes.
We’ve captured some of Gary’s most important points here:
THE FAST WAY TO FLUSH AN OUTBOARD
WHY DO YOU NEED TO FLUSH YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR?
Gary reminds us that even if you’re not using your boat in the ocean, there’s still lots of salt and sediment inside our rivers, lakes and estuaries. And, especially if you’ve been around shallow fresh or saltwater, you need to flush your outboard.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO FLUSH AN OUTBOARD?
Although the anti-corrosion technology has greatly improved in recent years – see the video on why choose a Suzuki outboard – Gary reminds us that the salt and sediment in the water can build up and block the outlet ports in your outboard. That’s why most manufacturers still say you should flush your outboard after every use.
STEP BY STEP: 6-MINUTE OUTBOARD FLUSH
Gary shows how it’s done using Suzuki’s reverse-flush system as an example – all manufacturers have a largely similar system for flushing, although not all are quite as fast and advanced as the Suzuki outboards. But the basic steps are the same:
- Switch off the outboard motor – never flush with the motor running.
- Remove the plug from the port – with the Suzuki, it’s an easy-to-reach side port with a plug that just pulls out fast.
- Insert the flush fitting – it’s a fitting that allows you to connect a hosepipe to the port in your outboard.
- Open the water and let it flush for 5–6 minutes – remember to do this while the motor is off.
- Remove the hosepipe and the flush fitting – replace your plug and you’re good to go!
