In this video, our own Warren Rachman takes us through some of the amazing technological advances that make Suzuki one of the preferred outboards worldwide. He’s been dedicated in the Suzuki family for some 13 years, with numerous years with others lie Honda and Yamaha before that, and about 30 years’ experience as a commercial skipper.
Probably one of the most experienced outboard technicians and Africa and the Middle-East (if not the world!), Warren is a marine-operations advisor to international peacekeeping forces, so he really knows his stuff. And he reckons you buy a Suzuki because of the superior engineering: “You get better fuel economy, more power and lower noise, all for a better boating experience.”
11 REASONS WHY YOU’D CHOOSE SUZUKI
1 SUZUKI’S INDUSTRY-LEADING LEAN BURN TECHNOLOGY
Available on most Suzukis, from the DF15A all the way up to the DF350 (excepting the V6 version of the DF200 and DF250), Lean Burn is an intelligent system that automatically optimises the fuel-air mixture for optimum combustion, depending on your boating conditions. It makes the outboard cheaper to run. Discover Suzuki Lean Burn.
2 VARIABLE VALVE-TIMING (VVT)
Standard on all outboards from the DF150 upward, VVT means an intelligent system that can adjust the timing to give you different types of power output at different speeds. Important, because on a boat you often want more torque on your mid to lower speeds. See more on variable valve timing.
3 MULTI-STAGE INDUCTION FOR BETTER AIRFLOW
Suzukis feature the ability to switch between longer and shorter manifold air intakes, which they do automatically based on your speed and the power you need. Basically just giving you more efficient power by controlling the air pressure and combustion inside the motor. Explore multi-stage induction.
4 BETTER WEIGHT AND BALANCE WITH OFFSET DRIVE SHAFT
One of the technologies Suzuki pioneered, the offset driveshaft meant that Suzuki could move its motor to sit over the transom – in the past, the motor would hang over the back of the boat. But the offset driveshaft means you get better weight distribution, which gives you less vibration and noise but also means the Suzuki motor is more compact. It’s available from the Suzuki DF70A upwards.

5 2-STAGE GEAR REDUCTION
Another very important innovation is Suzuki’s gear reduction that happens in two places in the motor. This gave Suzuki the power to turn larger propellers more effectively, giving you extra power and faster acceleration.
6 SUZUKI IS THE MOST AWARDED OUTBOARD MANUFACTURER
Suzuki has won more NMMA awards than any other outboards manufacturer. And the awards honour superior technology that’s cost-effective and “truly beneficial to the consumer”. Check out the list of Suzuki’s most award-wining outboard motors.
7 SELF-ADJUSTING TIMING CHAIN
From the DF40 up, Suzukis feature a no-maintenance timing chain that’s permanently lubricated and completely self-adjusting. Warren says he’s personally seen one of these with 3500 hours on it that still looks brand new!
8 SPECIAL ANTI-CORROSION FINISH
Anti-corrosion is bonded to all the most important metal parts of the engine, meaning they last longer.
9 ADVANCED TITL LIFT SYSTEM
Suzuki features a more advanced outboard tilt and lift system, and there are numerous ways to control it – often right from the control console, but there’s also a manual lift option.
10 MULTI-POINT SEQUENTIAL FUEL INJECTION
Suzukis feature fully computerised and electronic fuel injectors, which is a huge leap over the old carburetor fuel-delivery method, giving you up to 50% better fuel consumption.
11 ALL SUZUKI 4-STROKES FEATURE DOHC
The double-overhead cams in Suzukis give you four valves per cylinder, and it makes your outboard more compact and, together with all the fuel-saving and optimising systems, gives you a better all-round performance.

BONUS: SUZUKI DF140A REVIEW
In this test run, the Suzuki DF140A under review achieved an average of 16.4 Litres per hour at 21 knots in choppy conditions. And did 19.6 Litres per hour at 26 knots. Thanks to Suzuki Lean Burn.
