Next Up: 12 x 12 Species Bill and Game Fish in St Lucia

The 12 species nominated, all the dates and what to expect from this year’s 12 x 12 Species fishing competition in St Lucia

Just five fish of each species. That’s all every team can weigh in (or release) during the two days of big game and billfish fishing at this year’s 12 x 12 Species competition at St Lucia 25–27 October 2019.

CONSERVATION IN MIND

The 12 x 12 Species is specifically structured to keep fish conservation in mind. By limiting total competition catches to just five specimens of every species per boat, it helps limit the impact on fish populations.

What this means is that, if you’ve caught five dorados on day one, for example, you can’t weigh another dorado. Further, all marlin, sailfish, spearfish and kingfish are strictly catch and release only. You have to produce photo and video evidence of the release. And the same rule counts: only five specimens per species per boat.

THE 12 X 12 SPECIES

All 12 the species allowed in the 12 x 12 Species, plus their minimum qualifying weights:

  1. Blue & Black Marlin – min 150kg, release only
  2. Striped Marlin – min 75kg, release only
  3. Sailfish – min 30kg, release only
  4. Shortbill Spearfish – min 15kg, release only
  5. Dorado – min 5kg
  6. Couta – min 5kg
  7. Wahoo – min 6kg
  8. Tuna (any Tuna species) – min 6kg
  9. Kingfish (any Kingfish species) – min 6kg, release only
  10. Queenfish – min 3kg
  11. Natal Snoek – min 3kg
  12. Prodigalson – min 6kg
