Next: Some Big Fishing Competitions in October
SA’s Protea team battles the World Champs in France and there’s Rumbly Bay Tuna Interprovincials, Limpopo Interclub and 12 X 12 Species in St Lucia
Note: We’ll update for 2019 as soon as info becomes available. In the meantime, you can have a look at this complete selection of the entire year’s big fishing competitions in South Africa.
In fishing competitions this October 2018 all provinces meet in Simon’s Town for the Tuna Interprovincial at Rumbly Bay – let’s hope the tuna is still running. Limpopo also has its interclub hosted by Letaba Ski-Boat Club in Mozambique and it’s time for the 12 X 12 Species again in St Lucia.
But first, the Protea fishermen are still in Frontignan, France, for the FIPS-M World Championships …
FIPS-M WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
29 SEPTEMBER–6 OCTOBER 2018
The competition started in end September and continues into the first week of October. This is the international fishing body Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive–Mer (FIPS-M) Big Game Fishing World Championships 2018.
And the Proteas are taking part in an exclusively no-kill competition.
This part of France, the port town of Frontignan La Peyrade, where local club La Pêche Sportive Frontignanaise is hosting, is well known for delivery very big tuna and swordfish. The trick here is that all teams must capture their catches on film. It’s strictly catch, weigh and release.
They’re prepping for 10-hour days, fishing every day from 7:00–17:00 (French time). And you can keep updated on the events through Nauti-Tech Suzuki and the SADSAA Facebook page.
LIMPOPO INTERCLUB/LETABA SKI-BOAT CLUB COMP
Limpopo has their interclub competition, hosted by Letaba Ski-Boat Club, in the picturesque Paindane in Mozambique.
It might seem like quite a trek for the boys to go from Tzaneen and the surrounds all the way to Mozambique, but Paindane is a beautiful place and the fishing is good, very good. You get some interesting species there too, so we’re very interested in seeing what comes out of the five-day competition.
Hosts: Letaba Ski-Boat Club | Tzaneen
Dates: 1–5 October 2018

Venue: Paindane, Mozambique
50TH RUMBLY BAY TUNA INTERPROVINCIAL & INVITATIONAL
One of SA’s oldest and best-known competitions celebrates its 50th instalment in 2018. As the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association (WPDSAA) and Cape Boat and Ski-Boat Club in Simon’s Town welcome all national, provincial and novice teams to come and make history this October at the 50th Annual Rumbly Bay Tuna Invitational.
Fishing off Miller’s Point where the Clubhouses is situated, this area is renowned for delivering monster tuna: most current SA record catches were recorded right here. Even if you’re not fishing, it’s still an experience to come out here and see history being made in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
Hosts: Cape Boat and Ski-Boat Club | Rumbly Bay | MIller’s Point | Simon’s Town
Dates: 15–20 October 2018

12 X 12 SPECIES
One of SA’s most conservation-minded competitions: 12 species are nominated and each team is only allowed to catch and weigh in five specimens of each species. The idea is that limiting the number of catches minimises the competition’s impact on fish populations, good for conservation.
Among the species are blue marlin, sailfish, striped marlin, Natal snoek, dorado and more. And the fishing is good in St Lucia, so see you at the 12 x 12 Species fishing competition.
Hosts: St Lucia Ski-Boat Club | Sugarloaf Drive, St Lucia
Dates: 26–28 October 2018
Contact: +27 (0)35 590 1376
Association: Zululand Deep Sea Angling Association (ZDSAA) | +27 (0)35 753 5804
