Provincial step-outs. 10kg lines.. And big billfish. Some of the best in light-tackle game fishing are gathering at the Leatherback Lapa in Sodwana this month. It’s 3-man provincial teams, facing off against each other under IGFA/ SADSAA rules – should be quite a show at this Light-Tackle Billfish Interprovincial.

COVID 19 TUNA BONANZA
10–17 OCTOBER 2020
21 Boats. 4 Days. And 40 lekker tuna. After a crazy year of isolation and continuing worry, Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club decided to organise one of the first sizable commercial tournaments we’ve seen after the lockdown. And you should see the heaviest fish caught at the Covid 19 Tuna Bonanza in Gordon’s Bay.

FISHING COMPS FROM OCTOBER 2019
Monster tuna and a chance for everyone to fish alongside the best of the best at the 51st annual Rumbly Bay Tune Invitational – and SADSAA’s Own Choice Tuna Interprovincial – and more awesome game fishing along the east coast at this year’s 12 X 12 Species at St Lucia Ski-Bot Club. These are the big fishing competitions in October 2019.
51ST RUMBLY BAY TUNA INVITATIONAL
21–26 OCTOBER 2019
One of SA’s oldest and best-known competitions celebrates its 51st year in 2019. This is the open competitive side to this event (there’s an official SASAA side to it below), and there are loads of awesome cash prizes and goodies to be won as the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association (WPDSAA) and Cape Boat and Ski-Boat Club in Simon’s Town welcome all national, provincial and novice teams to the Rumbly Bay Tuna Invitational.

OWN CHOICE TUNA INTERPROVINCIAL
21–26 OCTOBER 2019
Happening at the same time and place (Cape Boat and Ski-Boat) as the Rumbly Bay tuna comp, the Own Choice Interprovincial is the official SADSAA tuna fishing side, meaning it’s for the amateur anglers who have (or are gunning for) provincial and national colours. It’s much more stringent rules and precise fishing – usually pulling out massive tuna with nothing but a 10kg line, so it’s naturally spectacular to see these guys in action.

12 X 12 SPECIES
25–27 OCTOBER 2019
One of SA’s most conservation-minded game fish competitions: 12 species are nominated and each team is only allowed to catch and weigh-in five specimens of each species. The idea is that limiting the number of catches minimises the competition’s impact on fish populations, good for conservation. Check out the 12 x 12 Species at St Lucia Ski-Boat Club.
