DISCOVER YZERFONTEIN BOAT ANGLING CLUB
“We have a very big clubhouse with loads of things to do here,” says club chairman Theunis Kruger. “And, of course, we have the restaurant and bar that’s open all the time and we really encourage the public and holidaymakers to come and experience that lekker West Coast hospitality.”
And the fishing is superb. After all, this is the snoek capital of the Cape. There’s a thriving big commercial fishing industry here, with slipways that can easily handle up to 140 boat launches a day, and a fish market in town for trading.
CLUB FACILITIES
From fresh fish and seafood at Lulas to braais, conferencing and a venue for events, Yzerfontein Boat Angling Club is part of the big Yzerfontein Sports & Recreation Club on Beach Road, so you have access to a whole range of facilities here – from pool to a swimming pool and even yoga classes.
Club members get a good discount at the bar and, of course, there are big-screen TVs and satellite connectivity for all the big sports events.
BOAT LAUNCH, FACILITIES AND SERVICES
Yzerfontein Boat Angling club gives you access to the harbour boat launch. There are two huge slipways that are built for handling all kinds of traffic – it easily sees hundreds of boats launching when the snoek is running. And the breakwater means launching is safe and comfortable.
And the boat survey service is outstanding. The club’s safety officer is qualified to survey both ski-boats and commercial vessels. And the club subsidises your survey, which includes your SADSAA disc and qualification to take part in fishing competitions.
The club is also attached to NSRI Station 34, which provides an incredibly valuable safety service on the water in this area.
FISHING COMPETITIONS AT YZERFONTEIN BOAT ANGLING CLUB
The club is probably best known for the annual Yzerfontein Snoek Derby that takes place mid or late December. The waters around Yzerfontein is very rich in anchovy and pilchard, which is why the snoek travel down to the reefs around nearby Dassen Island, making for a very rich fishing grounds.
But, in wintertime, the weather drives the water temperatures up a bit, and Yzerfontein becomes a good spot for fishing yellowtail. Check out the late-winter Yzerfontein Yellowtail Challenge.
FISHING AT YZERFONTEIN BOAT ANGLING CLUB
Apart from the snoek around Dassen Island and the yellowtail in winter, Yzerfontein is traditionally a good site to launch from to go after tuna further up along the coast. But Theunis says, though they hardly see yellowfin here anymore – it was always a very popular spot among big commercial fishers, there’s still a good amount of longfin tuna for those who like their game fish.
He area is rich in reef and fishing holes – just ask the locals – and there’s good steenbras, galjoen and hottentot to be caught out here.
YZERFONTEIN FISHING SPOTS
One nice thing about Yzerfontein is that you can often find fish activity right near the harbour – including rock lobster. But you get easy access from here to rich fishing spots like Vondeling Island (33º09’10S / 17º59’00E) on the way to Langebaan and Kalkoond (33º25’06S / 18º05’45E) further up towards St Helena.
But most guys will want to go the 12km out toward the famously rich Dassen Island from here, especially the southern parts (32º25’77S / 18º05’98E) where the fishing’s very good. Just be careful, though, the locals will warn you that there are plenty of submerged reefs around here. Another option is to try the northern part of the island (33º24’29S / 18º04’12E).
You can always ask the locals at Yzerfontein Boat Angling Club, they’ll know.
