]]> Big Ones at the 2024 Mapelane Billfish Invitational https://nautitechsuzuki.com/mapelane-billfish/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 05:00:10 +0000 https://nautitechsuzuki.com/?p=2769 We spoke to the club chair: What to expect, the programme, dates, venue, eligible species, rules and prizes at this year’s Mapelane Billfish Invitational

All species of marlin. Daily prizes. And the big overall prize for the best performance over the 4 days of awesome bill fishing. One of SA’s original conservation-minded comps, the Mapelane Billfish Invitational, takes place 13–16 March 2024 in St Lucia.

MAPELANE BILLFISH INVITATIONAL

With 2024 being its 24th year, the Mapelane Billfish Invitational was one of the first – if not SA’s first-ever – marlin comp that’s 100% tag and release from when it was started in 2000 to today. And it’s, of course, for club members and by special invitation only, for anglers who share the club’s conservation ideology – it’s inside parkland after all.

TOURNAMENT PROGRAMME

The 24th Mapelane Billfish Invitational is on 13–16 March 2024 at Mapelane Ski-Boat Club in the Mapelane reserve near St Lucia. Registration is on 13 March at the clubhouse, with 4 fishing days planned up until 16 March, weather permitting.

Teams launch at 6AM on fishing days, with lines up and weigh-in at 2pm every day. And the closing and awards ceremony will take place on 16 March at the clubhouse.

QUALIFYING SPECIES AND PRIZES

Black marlin, blue marlin and striped marlin were the only species that counted towards the daily prizes. And, again, it’s tag-and-release only (see the comp rules below).

Note that sailfish didn’t count towards your daily score in this comp, but they counted towards your overall score for the big prize. So, club chairman Les Hartley says a successful release on a sailfish could help boost your chances for the overall prize.

SPECIFIC TAG-AND-RELEASE RULES

Being one of SA’s pioneering billfish release comps, the club and the Mapelane Billfish Invitational organisers have over 20 years of experience in ensuring billfish safety and conservation. How a successful catch here works is, as soon as you have a hook-up, you radio it into beach control.

Now, they will have supplied each angler with a colour band, and you snap a picture of the fish on the leader with the angler and the colour band around their arm, all visible in the picture. And then you release the fish.

After lines up, the organisers will just review the call-in time, your photo and your recorded time etc. And if everything’s in order, you got yourself a successful release.

33 Anglers in 11 teams for 9 provinces. 5 Marlin species and 3 days of top-level game fishing. The Richards Bay Billfish Interprovincial is happening 2–5 March 2023. Organised by Zululand Deep Sea Angling Association (ZDSAA), SADSAA and hosted at Richards Bay Ski-boat Club, conditions are looking good – weather-wise – for an exciting comp this year.

“So far it looks like good fishing days, but there’s a good chance we’ll be able to fish all three of the planned days,” says Richards Bay Ski-Boat Club’s competitions officer, Charl Van Den Berg.

RICHARDS BAY BILLFISH INTERPROVINCIAL

One of SA’s best-known provincial-level billfish tournaments, the Richards Bay Billfish Interprovincial is a strictly catch-and-release marlin competition, fished under IGFA and SADSAA rules and 37kg line class. And there are nine provincial associations represented at this year’s tournament, which kicks off with registration in March 2023, with fishing commencing soon after. (See the programme below.)

And word is that it’s been an on-and-off season for the marlin in this usually very species-rich part of the country. “The fish have been a bit scarce of late compared to previous years,” Charl comments, “so the guys are going to have to bring their A-game.”

QUALIFYING FISH SPECIES

The Richards Bay Billfish Interprovincial only recognises billfish species, including short bill, black marlin, blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish. And points are awarded for successful releases, though all hook-ups should be reported and even the break-off time recorded.

SOME BILLFISH INTERPROVINCIAL COMPETITION RULES

For scoring, a successful release will be when the hook-up is radioed in to tournament control (a boat out at sea) and photo or video of the release is mandatory. The requirements are a clear image of the fish, under control and on the leader at the side of the boat, with the nominated coloured signal/item (to be confirmed at the briefing) in the frame with the correct time and date stamp visible.

The clubhouse will be open for members during the tournament. Tight lines to everyone!

BILLFISH 15000 WELCOME AND LAUNCH

Normally, you have loads of teams from all over the world – Finland, Wales, Italy, Australia, England, Hawaii, Zimbabwe, Azores, Namibia, Germany, Canada and Swaziland – joining local South African anglers in taking part in the Billfish 15000. And that’s still the case this year, though it’s worth noting that Covid-19 has had some effect on the comp – and, of course, the organisers are ensuring the tournament’s Covid-safe!

The name of the game is going after billfish. But note: It’s strictly catch and release.

RECORD-BREAKING MARLIN

The tournament works on a points system. And all catches of billfish work strictly on tag and release. The tournament actively contributes to fish species data collection for the Oceanographic Research Institute. Even information on any game fish caught during the competition is fed back to the research teams.

And the competition has produced some big fish in past years. The biggest black marlin ever caught during the Billfish 15000 was a 375kg whopper in 2000. Another 351kg specimen was caught in 2010.

EXPECT BIG AND VARIED BILLFISH

One of the most unique things about the tournament is that past statistics show that teams have been very successful in catching a wide variety of sailfish species in the competition. Indications are that most boats catch as much as five different species on the first day of the comp. Let’s hope this points to more very successful fishing this year.

ABOUT THE BILLFISH 15000

Interesting fact: The competition started in 1987 when it got its name from the total amount of prize monies. There were 60 competing boats that year, and the grand prize was R15000 in cash. Today prizes total in the R millions and usually include a new boat for the winning team.

Today, the competition works on an invitation-only basis, with invitations extended to various ski-boat clubs. A committee is appointed to go through every entry to ensure that only the best of the best compete in every year’s tournament.
