PLUS: The new gear case also makes maintenance easier, because you n longer need to lift the boat when changing oil – bonus!

Now, there’s a lot of plastic in our oceans, and Suzuki has always been about using technology to give you the performance you want while still being good for the environment – read about Suzuki Lean Burn and fuel-saving tech for your boat – but this is the first time any outboard manufacturer has come up with such a unique, elegant and simple way to make a difference every time you hit the water.

HOW SUZUKI’S NEW MICRIOPLASTIC COLLECTOR WORKS

It may not look like much. A few bits of black piping with a filter inside. But this device connects to your motor’s water cooling system, and just filters out microscopic bits of plastic that would otherwise have ended up ingested by fish, marine mammals and seabirds – and often land up right on your own dinner plate at home!

The microplastic collection device is easily attached your outboard’s return hose. And it won’t impact your performance at all, since it only filters the water after it’s been through the motor’s cooling cycle – so it’s water your outboard would have just pumped back into the ocean anyway.

HANG ON: WHY IS FILTERING MICRIOLASTIC SO IMPORTANT? 

According to experts at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, right now there are about 51 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans – that’s 500 times as many stars there are in our Milky Way galaxy! And that’s because we humans dump about 8 million tonnes of plastic into the oceans every year.

In fact, about 80% of all the pollution in the ocean is plastic. Some experts estimate the combined weight of all the plastic in the ocean could exceed that of all ocean fish pretty soon. And that’s bad news for anglers – actually everyone!

And the most dangerous of these toxic menaces is microplastic – microscopic bits of plastic that end up ingested and killing ocean life.

Look, we just have to find more ways to get the plastic out of the ocean and keep it out. That’s why Suzuki has been running its Clean Oceans Project for the past 10 years – which is exactly what the new microplastic collection device is commemorating.

JUST FOR FUN: HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE TO CLEAN UP OUR OCEANS?

You can actually work it out. Since the new Suzuki microplastic collection device filters your outboard’s water for cooling, we can estimate that at low RPMs it filters about 4000 litres per minute, the same as your average garden hose – because that’s what we use to flush an outboard.

But, there’s an awful lot of water in the ocean.

To filter just the first 10 kilometres along South Africa’s 2800km stretch of coastline up to a depth of just 1 metre, you’d have to give every man, woman and child in South Africa (57 odd millions of us) each a Suzuki-powered boat. And it would still take 11 years!

But if you gave everyone a CarryCat with two motors, we could do it in maybe 6 years or so.

WATCH: WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A BOAT

This video features Chrisjan Jansen, workshop manager at Boat, Caravan & Campins in Nigel, one of the largest pre-owned boat suppliers in Africa. From fishing boats to leisure outboard boats, Chrisjan really knows his used boats. And he gives us a valuable used boat checklist on what to look for when buying – we’ve pulled out some of the most NB points in his video below.

1 CHECK THE BOAT’S BUOYANCY

The buoyancy required for a boat is regulated by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), the same guys who certify your boat and issues your skipper’s licence. And they have specific guidelines for different types of boats.

Chrisjan shows a sea-going boat as example in the video, which needs to have a buoyancy of 60% (which is a good general built-in buoyancy guide for any boat), according to SAMSA regulations. So, you have to check the boat you’re looking to buy meets the specs. And that depends, of course, on what you want to use the boat for.

2 WHAT’S YOUR APPLICATION?

Chrisjan says there are basically 3 types of boats you want to look at. For a freshwater dam and estuary run around, you can look at a smaller vessel with a single motor, such as these Bandit boats or cabin cruisers.

For sports fishing, you want a powerful sea-going boat that’ll give you the ability to get offshore and to the fish fast. You might want to look at a good fishing boat setup, like a powered cat with two motors, such as a CarryCat option.

And when it comes to leisure boating, you want something versatile. A boat that you can use to go fishing, or skiing or to take a few people out for sundowners and a braai. Check out these monohull boats, or even opt for a full-on party barge.

3 INSPECT THE TRANSOM

Especially when it comes to inspecting used boats, you want to make sure the transom is in good condition (the part where the motor sits on the back of the boat). Chrisjan recommends doing a quick test: trim up the motor and push down on the skeg (flat surface) with your hand. 

If it flexes too much, especially if you look at the washers and where the motor is mounted, it could be a problem. So insists that it gets fixed, or look for something else.

4 CHECK THE FLOORING

A simple test for the floor is to just walk on it. See if you can feel any flex or unevenness. You can even stomp on it to make sure it feels good and solid.

5 INSIST ON A GOOD TRAILER

Chrisjan says the trailer is a very important part of buying a boat because it spends most of its lifetime on it. You want to be sure the trailer allows you to launch the boat the way you intend to. You want to check for rust and wear – be wary of trailers with wood in their construction as it rots away with time.

And he recommends always checking that the trailer has an oil-filled axle, else it just wears away too quickly.

6 GET THE IDEAL POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO

Chrisjan says to always opt for the highest possible HP rating your boat is allowed. The bigger motor gives you more torque and power, meaning you can carry more people and weight. But he also notes that the higher the HP, the better your boat’s turning and manoeuvrability will be, too.

7 ALWAYS INSPECT THE BOAT YOURSELF

What the boat looks like is an important part of buying a boat. That’s why Chrisjan recommends you always go and physically inspect the boat in person. When buying used, there can be small scratches on the hull, which you can easily take care of with a buff and polish. So go take a look before you decide to buy.

8 SHOP AROUND FOR EXTRAS

ABOUT THE NEW SUZUKI DF140BG

It really is the first 140hp outboard to feature drive-by-wire technology – the current DF140A is mechanical. And that means the new BG version is more responsive when you throttle or shift gears, and it’s going to give you better fuel efficiency.

HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE CURRENT DF140A?

Slightly bigger and heavier than the DF140A, the new DF140BG features a higher compression ratio and torque output. So you’re also going to feel the difference in terms of speed and acceleration.

Let’s take a look at some of the main improvements in the new DF140BG:

6 MAIN FEATURES

1. HIGHER COMPRESSION RATIO

The Suzuki engineers have taken the tried and tested 2 045cm3 four-cylinder 4-stroke engine of DF140A series and boosted it’s 9.7 compression ratio to a remarkable 10.5 in the new DF140BG.

That means max torque is up to 163.7Nm and you’re going to see the fuel savings on your pocket.

2. BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY

We’ve tested the new 140BG, and you’re going to see 4% less fuel usage at lower speeds and up to 14% better fuel efficiency at top-end speeds.

3. MORE SPEED, FASTER ACCELERATION

We’ve put the Suzuki DF140BG through its paces, and it’s a speed monster! The more responsive drive-by-wire system meant it gave us about 1 second faster acceleration times than the existing mechanical 140A.

And we got an average of 3.6km/h faster top speed.

4. GREAT NEW DESIGN

When you compare the look of the BG to the A-series, you’ll see it features a smooth and sleek new finish. With new all-black decals. And it comes in Nebular Black and Super Cool White colour options.

But it’s not all good looks. The new cowling design is actually to house a new air-intake structure that enhances intake performance too.

5. QUIETER OPERATION

That means she’s also quieter! The new intake is specially designed with a new large-volume resonator that reduces high-pitched noises at the intakes. And we’ve also included an optimised silencer that reduces resonance.

Plus: We’ve soundproofed the engine! That’s right, Suzuki completely replaced the engine cover material with an all-new, all-quiet sound-absorbing compound.

6. EASIER TO MAINTAIN

We’ve also made it easier to reach the oil filter. All you have to do is lift the upper cover and you get instant access to the filter. And there’s also a handy new oil spray tray that catches excess liquid when out technicians replace the filter. So your new DF140BG stays beautifully clean.

WHEN CAN I BUY THE NEW SUZUKI DF140BG?

The new DF140BG is available in TL and TX/ZX versions, in white or black. And the first shipment arrives in South Africa in October 2020.

It’s going to be a limited first batch, so Suzuki Marine has said we can take pre-orders right now.

Outboard fuel consumption and boat fuel economy is becoming more important than ever. The Market Research Report Search Engine says that in April 2019 more companies were researching more efficient marine propulsion systems than ever before. And, at the recent Dubai Boat Show, nearly 40% of some of the top new boats unveiled are aimed at slashing boat fuel consumption drastically in the next few years.

And it makes sense. South Africa is still reeling from an early April 2019 fuel price increase that had associations petitioning government to step in and try to stay further increases. But that’s not going to happen soon, as the fuel price goes up again in May 2019.

So, we looked at 4 technologies from Suzuki that boost your outboard and boat’s fuel economy, while giving you max power output. We also show you a few fuel-efficient Suzuki outboards and look at drag-efficient boat hull types that boost fuel economy without sacrificing power.

4 SUZUKI TECHNOLOGIES FOR OUTBOARD FUEL ECONOMY

SUZUKI LEAN BURN

It’s like an intelligent “brain” inside every new Suzuki outboard. A central control unit inside the outboard that constantly measures your speed, acceleration and the conditions in and around the motor, and then automatically adjusts the fuel-air intake ratio, to give you maximum efficiency. It can boost your boat’s fuel economy by up to 42% and most Suzuki engines come standard with this tech.

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING

An intelligent design in the outboard’s camshaft allows the engine to delay or speed up the time intervals between fuel/air intake and outlet to automatically adjust the outboard’s performance at various speeds. This tech lets the engine “modify” valve timing to give you better torque at low speeds or more horsepower during higher speeds – boosting both performance and fuel economy in all outboards over 150hp with Suzuki’s variable valve timing.

MULTI-STAGE INDUCTION

Engineers discovered that you can maximise an engine’s performance and fuel economy at the same time by controlling how the air is fed to the motor. At lower RPM, when you’re trolling or cruising, you want more torque, which needs a precise amount of air that’s been sped up. At higher RPM, you want horsepower, which needs large-volume free-flowing air directly fed into the chamber. Suzuki engineers have developed a system that does this automatically, upping performance and fuel economy. See how it works in outboards over 150hp with Suzuki multi-stage induction.

THE ULTIMATE OUTBOARD OIL: ECSTAR BY SUZUKI

It took Suzuki 35 years to develop the ultimate motor oil for higher performance and fuel economy in its engines. They started testing it on Suzuki racing bikes in the MotoGP a few years back. Now, after three top-5 finishes in the last four MotoGP races, Suzuki has brought that fuel-saving technology to its outboard motors. POWERED CATAMARAN HULLS

Using updated dual-sponson designs to the original catamarans, today’s powered catamarans overcome the drag that you get with a traditional mono-hull boat (single hull) to give you better performance while saving you fuel (you can run them more efficiently off smaller engines).

CATHEDRAL HULLS

A mix between the normal mono-hull boat and a cat design, the cathedral hull has a much shallower central hull, with two stabilising sponsons. The result – usually boosted by being made from very buoyant materials – is a boat with a very shallow waterline that almost strides across the water, saving you fuel in the long run.

It’s been put to great use in the utility boats – you can use them as riverboats, bass boats, on a lake, in estuaries or even take the larger versions out to sea – in the Bandit 380, its bigger sister, the Bandit 410 and the bigger, two-engined Bandit 490.
